The area covers 14,000 ha in monsoon but dry season this falls to nearly 4,000 ha. There are 15 amphibians, 21 reptilians, 13 mammals, 98 local fish and 160 bird species. It is one of the 19 internationally Important Bird Areas in Bangladesh. The Baikka beel which is found within the Haor area has been a Permanent Fish Sanctuary since 2003.
